How Q-Switched Laser Technology Works for Professional Skin Treatments and Tattoo Removal
Trusted by med spas, dermatology clinics, and dedicated laser tattoo removal practices nationwide, Astanza’s Q-switched laser systems are designed for clinical reliability, treatment versatility, and high-volume performance. In addition to tattoo removal, Q-switched technology can support treatments for certain benign pigmented lesions and skin tone concerns, allowing practices to diversify services while maximizing device utilization.
How does a Q-swiched laser work?
Inside the laser, energy is being pumped into a crystal to create light. But instead of letting that light shoot out immediately, the Q-switch acts like a lock. It temporarily blocks the light from leaving. The energy has nowhere to go, so it just builds up and gets more and more intense, like the tension in a stretched rubber band.
Once the energy reaches its absolute maximum limit, the Q-switch suddenly “opens” or unlocks. Because the “lock” was removed instantly, all of that trapped, highly energized light shoots out of the laser at the exact same time.
This creates a pulse of light that only lasts for a nanosecond (one-billionth of a second). Because all that energy is squeezed into such a tiny sliver of time, the peak power of that single flash is astronomically high.
Why Do We Want This?
When light hits something that fast and that hard, it changes how it interacts with the target.
Instead of heating up the target and burning it, the incredibly fast Q-switched pulse hits it like a physical hammer. It creates a tiny, microscopic shockwave (called a photoacoustic effect).
This shockwave is what shatters tattoo ink or unwanted dark spots under the skin, all without leaving the laser on long enough to burn the surrounding tissue.
